The Cleophas Club Records, 1940-1971

Background:

The Cleophas Club was created in 1940 to broaden the literary and cultural knowledge of its members, women from the West End and Ensley areas of Birmingham. The club became an affiliate of the Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs on April 4, 1940, and of the General Federation of Women's Clubs on November 16, 1940.

Scope and Content:

The club's records consist of minutes, a scrapbook, correspondence, bank account statements, and a guest register for a special event sponsored by the club in 1959. The scrapbook includes a history of the organization, yearbooks, newspaper clippings reporting club activities and programs, and documents relating to the club's creation.
