The Civil Rights Movement And Race Relations

As early as the 1950s the Birmingham Public Library began collecting material documenting the Civil Rights Movement and race relations in Alabama. This effort accelerated in 1976 with the establishment of the library's  Archives Department. The department now holds the largest collection in existence of material relating to Birmingham's civil rights movement.

Over the past three decades the department's civil rights collections have been used for projects ranging from class papers to master's theses, doctoral dissertations, books, motion picture productions, and museum exhibits. Books researched in the Archives include Glenn Eskew's But for Birmingham, Dan Carter's biography of George Wallace The Politics of Rage, Diane McWhorter's Carry Me Home, and Taylor Branch's Pulitzer Prize winning biography of Martin Luther King Parting the Waters. Motion picture productions researched in the Archives include the PBS series Eyes on the Prize and the Spike Lee documentary Four Little Girls. Material from the department's holdings may be found on permanent display in the museum of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, and the National Park Service welcome center at the Martin Luther King Center in Atlanta.
