Biography:
Thomas
Granville Brabston was born in 1880 in Warren County, Mississippi. He attended
public
schools and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1905, he married Nellie
Davis of Columbus,
Mississippi, and they had one daughter, Mary Virginia. After moving to
Birmingham, Alabama the family
lived at 926 28th Street South. Mrs. Brabston's sister, May Davis
Flinn, lived with them.
Brabston
started work with the Birmingham Electric Company in 1899. In 1905 he became
Traffic
Manager, then General Superintendent of Transportation. In 1935 he was promoted
to Assistant to the Vice
President, and in 1937 he became General Passenger Agent, the position in which
he remained until his
retirement in 1950. Brabston was active in community affairs with an emphasis on
his work in the Masonic
Order.

The
material in this collection was generated by the Brabston household. The
collection reflects the
interests and mores of an upper-middle class family in the period 1910-1950
These papers
are divided into two series: Flinn and Brabston. The Flinn series contains the
correspondence of May Davis Flinn (Mrs. Frank Flinn) both before and after her
marriage and a photograph
of Lawrence Pierce with whom she corresponded before her marriage.
The Brabston
series contains material relating chiefly to Mary Virginia Brabston. Included
are letters
she wrote as a child, lists relating to her wedding, and material generated as a
result of her death in 1949. Also
included are photographs of various Brabston family members as well as Mary
Virginia Brabston's memory
book containing newspaper clipping relating to the engagements and marriages of
young women from prominent
Birmingham families in the early 1930s.
