Greene Family
Papers, 1787-1954

Biography/Background:

The Green (or Greene) family was among the earliest white families to settle in Jefferson County, Alabama. One line of the family, George Livingston Green and his wife Jane Magill, migrated from South Carolina and settled in Jones Valley sometime between 1819 and 1827.

Scope and Content:

This collection, copied onto two reels of microfilm, contains correspondence, financial records, land records, and other material of the Greene (also spelled Green) family of Jefferson County, Alabama. The bulk of the material on the first reel of microfilm consists of land titles, indentures, and lists of personal property. The primary individuals included are George Livingston Green; Robert Hardy Greene; George H. Green; Robert Smith Greene, his wife Amanda Truss Greene, and their children Julius C. Greene, Anna M. Greene, Thomas E. Greene, Mary Greene, and John Robert Greene.

The second reel of microfilm contains copies of scattered, incomplete, and often damaged newspapers kept by Robert Hardy Green. The newspapers are the United States Telegraph (published in Washington City, now Washington D.C.), 1833, 1834, 1835, and 1837; State Rights Expositor (Tuscaloosa), 1834; Alabama Intelligencer and State Rights Expositor, 1834 and 1835; Mobile Commercial Register and Patriot, 1834; Columbia Telegraph, undated; Augusta Chronicle, 1836; Washington Chronicle, 1838; Niles National Register (Baltimore), 1840; The Southern Press (Washington City), 1850 and 1851; Advertiser and State Gazette (Montgomery), 1853; The Southern Field and Fireside (no place), 1861; and The Daily News (Birmingham), 1891.
