Wilmer, Richard Hooker Papers, 1873-1904 and 1956

Biography/Background:

Richard Hooker Wilmer was born in Alexandria, Virginia on March 15, 1816 and graduated from Yale College in 1836. Wilmer attended seminary in Virgina and was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1840. Following work at several parishes in Virginia and North Carolina he was elected the second Bishop of Alabama in 1861.

Wilmer died in Mobile, Alabama on June 14, 1900.

Scope and Content:

This small collection contains correspondence, published sermons, biographical information, and other material relating to Richard Hooker Wilmer's service as the second Episcopal Bishop of Alabama. The biographical material includes lengthy discussions of Wilmer's activities during and after the American Civil War, including his instruction that Alabama clergy obey orders issued by occupying Federal troops.
