Birmingham Public Library Appoints New
Associate Director
BIRMINGHAM, AL -- Birmingham Public Library is pleased to
announce that the Library Board has appointed Ms. Pamela O. Lyons as
Associate Director, effective August 10, 2002. Ms. Lyons succeeds Ms.
Barbara C. Sirmans, who was named Director of the Birmingham Public Library
in March of this year.
Ms. Lyons began her
career as a librarian in 1978, working in the Reference Department of the
Birmingham Public Library’s Central location. After working in several areas
and serving as Head of numerous departments, Ms. Lyons was promoted to
Southern Region Coordinator in 1991, where she was responsible for
overseeing the operations of Avondale, Eastwood, North Avondale, Southside
and Titusville branches of the Birmingham Public Library. In 2000, she was
named Public Services Coordinator.
Ms. Lyons is involved in numerous professional and
civic activities, including the American Library Association, Alabama
Library Association, and Public Library Association. She also serves as a
board member for the Friends of Avondale Park and is very active in the
United Way and Friendship Baptist Church in Homewood. Ms. Lyons has also
served as a past board member for the Five Points South YMCA. She is married
to Mr. Samuel O. Lyons, Jr., and mother of two children, Samuel III and
Ehren Ashely.
The Birmingham Public Library and its 20 branch
locations provide the public with the most current collections, as well as
the most comprehensive research tools in the state. The Birmingham Public
Library strives to inform visitors by hosting special programs year round,
such as Brown Bag Lunch series and Alabama Bound, in addition to children’s
programs from toddlers to teenagers. These programs allow the public to meet
