Birmingham Public Library presents Dr. Lorenzo Pace, author and illustrator of Jalani and the Lock, which recounts the true story of his great-great grandfather's passage from Africa to America. Pace will be performing on November 13 at 12 noon at the downtown library, 2100 Park Place and from 3:30 – 4:30 at the Pratt City Branch Library, 100 Hibernian Street. There is no charge for this performance.

Dr. Pace was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended South Pratt Elementary School and spent one year at Western-Olin (now Jackson-Olin) High School before moving to Chicago. He received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his doctorate in Art Education and Administration from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Pace currently maintains a studio in Brooklyn, New York and is the director of the Montclair State University Art Galleries in Upper Montclair, New Jersey.

As an artist, Lorenzo Pace has been inspired by objects for thirty years. Through relics he has learned to listen to his ancestors. Lonenzo was presented the lock and key that shackled his great-grandfather Steve Pace at the funeral of his father, Bishop Elder Eddie T. Pace. A bronze replica of the Pace Family’s original lock and key in interred within Triumph of the Human Spirit, the African Burial Ground Memorial Sculpture created by Lorenz Pace at Foley Square Park in New York City. The sculpture is a tribute to the African burial ground rediscovered in 1991 during construction of a federal building north of Wall Street. This is the word’s largest outdoor site devoted to enslaved African Americans. A subsequent archaeological dig uncovered the remains of over 400 African New Yorkers as well as about 600 burial artifacts. The site is believed to have been in use from 1712 to 1794 and to have housed the remains of ten to twenty thousand. This site has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
