SCORE small business workshop to take place at Central Library downtown on May 1

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama-The Birmingham Public Library is partnering with the Birmingham chapter of the Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE) to host a free small business workshop on Monday, May 1, 2017. The workshop series, Steps to Starting a Business, takes place monthly on the first Monday at the Central Library, 2100 Park Place downtown. 

The workshop will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Arrington Auditorium, 4th Floor, Linn-Henley Research Building.  The seminar is free, but registration in advance is required. Call Andy Mayo in the City of Birmingham’s Office of Economic Development at (205) 254-2774 or email him at

Another “Steps to Starting a Business” workshop has been set for Monday, June 5, 2017, also from noon to 1 p.m. Each seminar will cover the same topics, but the public is welcome to attend more than one day. Topics covered will include crafting a vision statement, identifying sources of funding, determining the legal structure of your business, devising a business plan, and investigating sources of business and economic information.  Seminar presenters will be veteran mentors from the local chapter of SCORE. 

SCORE is a national nonprofit association consisting of volunteers with business skills and experience who want to share their knowledge with prospective entrepreneurs and small business owners. For over 50 years, SCORE mentors have helped millions of Americans start and grow their own businesses.

Money Matters investing workshop slated for Wednesday, May 3 at the Central Library
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama-If you want to learn more about the stock market and other investment options, make plans to be at the Central Library in downtown Birmingham from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3. The Birmingham Public Library (BPL) is partnering with the staff of the Regions Institute for Financial Education at UAB to offer a free workshop, “Five Keys to Investing Success.” The workshop will take place in the Linn-Henley Research Library’s Fourth Floor Regional Library Computer Center, 2100 Park Place.
BPL and the Regions Institute for Financial Education have been offering the free Money Matters workshops in the Central Library on the first Wednesday of each month since July 2016. This is the last session scheduled for 2017, though others may be added later.
