BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-The old days of applying for jobs by sending resumes in the mail are falling by the wayside as companies focus on posting job openings online. If you need to become more knowledgeable about the new online job application process, make plans to take advantage of a free workshop at the Central Library in downtown Birmingham this Friday, July 21, 2017, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The workshop will be held in the Linn-Henley Research Building, 4th Floor Regional Library Computer Center.

Tina Thornton, a professional counselor and founder of Gem Kreations, is hosting free free Vocational Readiness workshops every Friday at the Central Library, 2100 Park Place, between July and September. Every third Friday, including this week, will focus on this topic: New Age Online Application Process. Thornton will share tips and suggestions to guide job seekers in successfully completing online employment applications.

On the second Fridays including last week, (Friday, July 14), Thornton shares tips for job candidates on how to make their resume stand out and improve their chances of finding employment. On first Fridays through September, attendees received a free individual assessment of professional goals/skills to find the best job fit.

On the fourth Fridays through September (including Friday, July 28), Thornton will host an Interview Bootcamp: teaching techniques to help job seekers emphasize their skills, overcome objections and build rapport with the job interviewer.
Whether a new graduate or a worker looking for a change in careers, take advantage of these free Vocational Readiness workshops between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Friday through the end of September 2017. Space is limited so register in advance by contacting Jim Murray, head of Central Library’s Business, Science and Technology Department, at 205-226-3691 or via email at

Each of the workshops will cover a different part of the job searching process, but participants are encouraged to attend all four because each builds on the content presented in the previous one. Read more about these free classes at the link below:
