Carnivals, Murder Mystery Party: Celebrate Halloween at the Birmingham Public Library  

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama—The Birmingham Public Library (BPL) has plenty of fun activities to get you in the Halloween spirit over the next week. During operational hours on Halloween Tuesday, Oct. 31, staffers at all 19 BPL locations will pass out candy and other treats to visiting patrons.

Among the Halloween highlights:

•    On Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at 2 p.m., the Five Points West Regional Library, 4812 Ave. W, will host Halloween movie matinee featuring actor/director Tyler Perry’s popular Madea character. Take-no-prisoners matriarch Madea battles ghouls and ghosts on Halloween night, all while making sure a teenage relative doesn't sneak off to a frat party she's forbidden to attend. •    At 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, Smithfield Library, #1 8th Ave. West, will host its annual fall festival, this time Harry Potter wizard-style. The Harry Potter Festival at Smithfield Library will feature games, trivia, and a Hogwarts worthy feast! For more information, call 205-324-8428.
•    At 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, Springville Road Regional Library, 1224 Old Springville Road, will host its annual Halloween Carnival. Families and patrons young and old are invited to enjoy games, stories, tricks, treats, and a screaming good time. Don't be afraid to wear your costume!   For more information, call 205-226-4081.

•    At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, the Pratt City Branch Library, 509 Dugan Ave., will host A Medea Halloween featuring a free showing of “Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween”, candy and other holiday fun for all ages. For more information, call 205-791-4997. 

•    At 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, drop by the Smithfield Library, #1 8th Ave. North, for the Smithfield Adult Book Club Murder Mystery Party. There will be a Mardi Gras-themed murder mystery party and discussion. Free and open to the public. Call 205-324-8428 for more information.
•    On Friday, Nov. 3 to close out Halloween week, BPL is taking its popular spoken word poetry/craft beer event, Bards & Brews, on the road to Oak Hill Cemetery, 1120 19th St. North in downtown Birmingham. Activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with special musical entertainment by the female Gothic band The Murder of Jane Crow. Springville Road Regional Library Children’s Librarian Mollie McFarland plays viola and sings background in the group. Poetry will begin to flow at 7 p.m. Bards & Brews is free and open to the public, but you must be 18 or older to attend and 21 or older to receive beer samples.

•    Count the candy corn, Southside Branch Library, 1814 11th Ave. South – Now through Friday, Oct. 27. Patrons can count the candy corn in the jar and qualify to win a prize. Patrons can submit one guess per day. For more information, call 205-933-7776.

•    Adults who check out three adult books or audiobooks will receive a sweet Halloween treat at North Birmingham Regional Library, 2501 31st Ave. North. Now through Halloween, Tuesday, Oct. 31 while supplies last. Call 205-226-4025 for more information. 
Monday, Oct. 30, 2017

 9:30 a.m. and repeat performance at 11 a.m. Tot Time with Mrs. Eve: Happy Halloween! Avondale Regional Branch Library, 509 40th St. South - Wear your Halloween costume as we celebrate Halloween with not-so-scary stories. We'll even Trick or Treat in the library! Tot Time is designed for 2 to 4 year olds, with a parent or caregiver; no groups, please. Free but 24-hour advance registration required. Call 205-226-4000.

•    6:30-7:30 p.m. Spooky Story Time at the Central Library, 2100 Park Place downtown. Come to the Central Youth Department Story Castle to hear and tell spooky stories. Refreshments and frights will be provided! For more information, call 205-226-3651.

3:45 p.m. Make It, Take It Halloween Crafts  at Inglenook Branch Library – Come to the Central Youth Department Story Castle to hear and tell spooky stories. Refreshments and frights will be provided!
