Birmingham Public Library to Host March 17 Talk with Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author John Archibald

Birmingham, Ala.– The Birmingham Public Library invites the public to tune into our Facebook page on Wednesday, March 17, at 6 p.m. as we present "A Conversation with Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author John Archibald," well known for his award-winning columns that have appeared in the Birmingham News and since 2004. Archibald was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2018 for his columns about Alabama politics including controversial Judge Roy Moore.

BPL Archives Department Head Jim Baggett will talk live with Archibald on the BPL Facebook page about his new book "Shaking the Gates of Hell," which will be released on Tuesday, March 9. The book is Archibald's provocative family memoir about growing up in Alabama in the 1960s as the son of white Methodist preacher who was silent in the pulpit despite the racial injustice going on across Alabama. The book examines the plight of white pastors afraid to speak out against racism due to the threat of the KKK and fear of losing church members during the civil rights movement.

Archibald writes of this difficult, at times uncomfortable, reckoning with his past in a book that is even more timely as the nation prepares for the trial beginning this week of a Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd last May, a killing that led America on a deep journey examining racial injustice that still exists today.
