Celebrate the holidays at the Birmingham Public Library 
Programs include West End Christmas Musical, Holiday Safari, Holiday Bingo for Adults
 
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama-Residents of the Birmingham-Hoover metro area will have plenty of opportunities to get in the holiday mood during the month of December at many of the 19 locations of the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) system.
 
Activities kick off this Saturday, Dec. 3 at Southside Branch and West End Branch with the first of several library performances of “From Page to Stage: A Christmas Carol, The Musical- A Reader’s Theater Workshop for Children.” On Sunday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m., BPL continues a holiday tradition with Irondale storyteller Dolores Hydock’s popular one-woman performance of A Christmas Memory,” the Truman Capote holiday classic. This time, Hydock’s event will have a special treat: slices of fruitcake for the public from BreadWorks.
 
Springville Road Regional Library will host its Holiday Open House this Sunday, Dec. 4 with refreshments from 3-5 p.m. and the Seasoned Readers performing at 4 p.m. Also patrons who find the elves on the shelves and solve the mystery of the missing Santa at East Lake Branch Library will get a chance to enter to win a Christmas gift. Enter now at East Lake Library, #5 Oporto-Madrid Blvd. Winners will be selected on Wednesday, Dec. 21.
 
All BPL locations will be closed for the Christmas holidays Friday, Dec. 23 through Monday, Dec. 26, reopening on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Saturday, Dec. 3
2:30 p.m. performances at both Southside Branch Library, 1814 11th Ave. South, and West End Branch Library, 1348 Tuscaloosa Ave. SW of “From Page to Stage A Christmas Carol: The Musical – A Reader’s Theater Workshop for Children”
BPL, in partnership with the Birmingham Children’s Theatre (BCT) and Junior League of Birmingham (JLB), invites you to attend “From Page to Stage: A Christmas Carol: The Musical – A Readers’ Theater Workshop for Children.”
In anticipation of the upcoming BCT performance of “A Christmas Carol,” BPL will be hosting free workshops at several of its area libraries. Children, aged 5 to 12, will learn how stories come alive through the magic of theater. JLB members will coach the children and introduce them to similar literature located in their local library. Each child will receive two free tickets (one child and one adult ticket) to the BCT A Christmas Carol production in December 2016.

Pratt City Library is hosting an open house in lieu of its bi-annual Christmas program.  
 
2:30 p.m., Adaptations Movie Matinee – Holiday Edition, Avondale Regional Branch Library, 509 40th St. South
Each month, the Avondale Regional Branch Library spotlights a movie and the book on which the film is based. The December showing is a holiday classic based on the short story "The Greatest Gift" by Philip Van Doren Stern, in which a man gets the chance to see what would happen if he'd never been born.

You can run and run, as fast you can, but you’ll never catch me, can you guess who I am? Be prepared to get a little messy as we make keepsake handprint wreathes during craft time! Story time designed for 2 to 4 year olds, with a parent or caregiver; no groups, please.
 
Holiday Scavenger Hunt, Ensley Branch Library, 1201 25th St. Ensley
Complete Ensley Library’s Holiday Scavenger Hunt between Dec. 5 and Dec. 16 for a chance to win a holiday gift basket filled with great treats!
 
3:30 p.m., Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, West End Branch Library, 1348 Tuscaloosa Ave. SW
Birmingham City Councilwoman Sheila Tyson will join West End Library for its annual tree-lighting ceremony. 
 
4 p.m., Tree Lighting Ceremony and Children's Holiday Party, Smithfield Library, #1 8th Ave. SW
The tree lighting ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. followed immediately by the children's holiday party in the Children's Department. Join us for an evening of crafts and fun for the whole family to enjoy. Refreshments will be served and Santa might join in the fun too!
 
Tuesday, Dec. 6
10 a.m., Love to Color @ My Library, North Avondale Branch Library, 501 43rd St. North
Join North Avondale Library to color beautiful holiday images and create a frame for your art work. Refreshments will be provided. Registration required. Call 205-592-2082.

Welcome in the holiday season by joining the Five Points West Library as staff decorates the library's Christmas tree. Light refreshments will be provided.

East Lake Library Grub Down!, East Lake Branch Library, #5 Oporto-Madrid Boulevard
Learn about some awesome animals at East Lake Library’s holiday meet and greet. See some of the coolest critters in town including Phineas the hedgehog, Jumanji the tortoise, Roderick the world's largest cockroach, Stitch the ferret, and more! Students will be allowed to learn about and interact with these tame yet exotic creatures.

Join us as we start the holiday season in style. We'll write letters to Santa and drink hot cocoa to our favorite holiday tunes. For our gaming enthusiasts, we'll even bring out our We Ski so you can practice before you hit the slopes!

The Springville Road Regional Branch Library is hosting its annual Christmas story time program. Festivities include a special “holiday safari” from Jared Baker of Animal Tales. Holiday Safari is a program that features six live animals. The children will select a present from beneath a small Christmas tree which corresponds to one of the surprise guest animals. An annual event at West End Branch since 2011, this event allows family and friends to gather and enjoy live Christmas music, and praise dance. Performers will be: More Than Conquerors Church Choir, New Pilgrim Baptist Church Choir, Covenant of Glory & Grace Worship Center, and Emmanuel Reese & Company. Pastor Pisani Baldwin will serve as Mistress of Ceremony.
 
6:30 p.m., Avondale Family Fun Night: Holiday Safari, 509 40th St. South

The Avondale Library Youth Department invites you to a night of family fun as we set out on a special “Holiday Safari.”  Along the way we will encounter tame librarians, wild books, and six extraordinary animal guests from Jared Baker of Animal Tales.  Everyone will have an opportunity to have a hands-on safari experience, so bring your camera.  24-hour advance registration required.
