Read It Forward 2013
Read It Forward 2013
with Christopher Paul Curtis' The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963
The Read It Forward concept is based on the book Pay it Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde, which is a story about an eighth grader who decides to change the world by doing a good deed for someone and then asks that person to "pay it forward" by doing the same for others.

Comments: A marvelous book. Kenny really reminds me of myself as a child - or at least how I now recollect my childhood self. So I really connected with how Kenny experienced the church bombing. I imagine most readers will be similarly drawn to Kenny's hopeful and compassionate outlook.

Comments: This is a great book to listen to on a family vacation. It is filled with humor but also tells of a very dark event in Birmingham's past. It is especially relevant since Birmingham is remembering the events of 1963 with 50 Years Forward. http://50yearsforward.com/

Comments: I found the beginning of the book to be in search of humor concerning matters that I am passionate about. There was nothing funny about the freedom struggle to me. The book is a bad version of Good Times (so far as I read. )The book took too long to get to what every its purpose was.I did not complete the book I'm told it gets better. In 1963 I was five years old,the offspring of freedom fighters, their sufferings and the civil climate had a major impact on my emotions as a five year old,Chicago's or Flint's version of Good Times it was not. Northerners should never look down on southerners except from geographical location or to lift them up.

Comments: This book is a wonderful look at the Civil Rights Movement and the experience of an African American family looking back into history in the south. The tone is lighthearted and warm between the family members even though there are sad events that are dealt with. Great book to introduce youth to the dark history of Birmingham in an appropriate manner.

Comments: I really enjoyed the story. I was confused about whether Joey had been in the church and whether Kenny had helped her escape. To add to the confusion in my mind she didn't seem to know that anything had happened. Maybe all this was clear to other people who read the book.

Comments: I read this story when I was much younger, but did not get as much as I got out of it this time around. With a mother born and raised in Birmingham, and a father from Philadelphia, PA, I always wondered what like would be like if my sister and I would have been raised in the North. What if we were like the Weird Watsons and would have to make that trip Down South? Living here in Birmingham has instilled in me a DEEP understanding and appreciation for the art of the struggle of the Civil Rights Movement. I know how the events of our past have shaped the attitudes of our present...I'm so thankful that Kenny's parents were so supportive and allowed him to go through his stage of confusion. Sometimes, I drive around Birmingham confused as to what I can do to get messages across to our people that some people are still HEALING, not just from the past, but from the pains and wounds of defeat and oppression. Birmingham, you don't have to be afraid to be brilliant, and this 50th Year Celebration is sole evidence of that fact. Rise up and take our city to higher heights, and keep the Civil Rights Movement moving. Never let it die.
